Polo has not been in the Olympics since 1936 but there is a mounting
interest in the polo community to help reinstate the sport in
time for Beijing in 2008 and/or New York (location still undetermined)
in 2012.
In support of this project, Polo America founder Randy Russell
is organizing a "Painted Polo Player" project, similar
to the Painted Cows, Painted Angels, or Painted Ponies Projects.
The idea is to paint statues of polo players, put them on display
at Kennedy International Airport for two months and then auction
them off to benefit charities to help send polo players to international
competition such as the FIP World Polo Championship in Chantilly,
France 2004 . Because of your interest in polo, you may want
to pass this opportunity to be an artist, on to your favorite
artist or your school art department. You can also participate
by purchasing a polo player at auction October 26, 2002 in Las
Vegas at Polo Expo. And finally, you can be a sponsor by buying
a polo player to be painted for $2500. Randy Russell writes:
Polo America would like to invite you to become a sponsor in
"The Colorful World of Polo" If you love this sport
of ours, you'll love the opportunity to become a part of the
biggest polo promotion
in history. Never before has our sport been given the chance
to expose itself to several million people over a three-month
time frame.
The Colorful World of
Polo is a unique
art exhibition that extends far beyond the art community. It
is an awareness promotion for our
sport and a fundraiser for the Federation of International
Polo Olympic Fund and the American International Polo
Foundation.
Polo America will produce
up to twenty-five life size fiberglass polo players that will
be painted by artists throughout the world. Each artist is invited
to paint or artistically transform the polo player model anyway
they wish, while keeping the structural integrity of the form
intact. This exhibition is similar to the Cows in New York or
the Angel's in Los Angeles.
..."The Colorful
World of Polo" will be exposed to several million
people. Phil Karber a polo player from Great Meadows Polo Club
has graciously made arrangements for us to showcase "The
Colorful World of Polo" at the JFK International Air Terminal
in New York from August 1st through September 30th, 2002.
From New York the
statues will go on display at Ford Trucks Polo America Expo where
they will be sold.
As a Polo Player Statue sponsor
you will receive the following:
1) A fiberglass life size polo
player form will be provided for an artist to paint.
2) Transportation of the form
will be provided from the factory to the artist to New York and
then to Las Vegas.
3) An eight page editorial
will be placed in the Ford Trucks Polo America Expo magazine
featuring photos of each Polo Player statue, name of statue,
artist and the logo or name of the sponsor.
4) Each sponsor will receive
two tickets to the pre-opening reception at JFK International
Air Terminal on July 31st.
5) Each statue will have a
nameplate with the name of the statue, artist and sponsor.
6) Press releases will feature
the name of the statue, artist and sponsor.

Sponsors inside the polo community
will be able to sponsor a polo player for only $2500.To make
this event possible, I am asking polo players, polo teams, their
companies, etc. to sponsor one of our polo players. Due
to the August 1st deadline of finished art we need to find sponsors
for each of our polo player statues within the next few weeks.
If you are interested in promoting our sport and sponsoring one
of our statues please call me at your earliest convenience.
