Pat Nesbitt, Pacific Coast Circuit
Governor, would like to announce that Willis Allen is the recipient
of the USPA Pacific Coast Circuit 2001 Sportsmanship Award.
The award was presented to Willis Allen as part of the Spreckels
Cup festivities held at San Diego Polo club including 30 Vintage
Racing Cars, 15 Antique Airplanes and the largest Polo Audience
of the year.
Willis Allen, 86, has been active in promoting polo since the
1930's, and was instrumental in the formation of San Diego Polo
Club, Eldorado Polo Club and Lakeside Polo Club. Willis has
been a strong supporter of Youth Polo
and a proud sponsor of the Poway Interscholastic 2001 Western
Regional and National Championship Team. The promotion of Polo,
good horsemanship and sportsmanship has been a life long endeavor
for Willis Allen During the presentation of the award, Alex Jacoy,
Eldorado Polo Club, Tom Goodspeed, San Diego Polo Club, Kip Hering,
Lakeside Polo, Danika and Shane
Rice, Poway Interscholastic Polo and Russ Sheldon, Lt. Gov. Pacific
Coast Circuit, all spoke of the many things and memories that
Willis Allen has brought to the sport of Polo. Willis was completely
surprised with the presentation as he thought he was attending
the Spreckels Cup to see his grandson Chris Collins play and
his son Bill Allen fly his bi-plane in as part of the Antique
Plane exhibit. He stated that his award meant so much to him
because it was from his polo peers and presented in front of
so many friends.
