Why do I need this coverage?

Personal equine liability is an exposure to any and all horse owners. Though the coverage excludes "business and professional" pursuits, most USPA members own their horse(s). Whether you are a "professional polo player" or a member who loves to play the game, equine liability is a necessary insurance in the litigious world we live in today. If you already have liability insurance through an equine farm or homeowners policy, your USPA coverage will pay in excess of any other coverage you may have. If none of your insurance responds to an equine liability claim, the USPA policy will become your primary coverage. Claims reported to us that involve the personal equine liability policy have recently been; while loading a horse into a trailer after an event, the horse got away from the handler and ran across a parking lot damaging two vehicles and injuring one person slightly. The claim was completely covered and the damaged parties were paid accordingly. Recently a farrier was injured while attempting to shoe a horse. Because the owner did not advise the farrier that the stallion was very high strung and energetic, a claim was filed for the farriers injuries and paid by the personal liability policy. Remember, if your horse causes serious bodily injury to a third party, your chance of being sued for negligence is extremely high. . . equine liability is included in the cost of your membership and will defend you and pay on your behalf these types of claims.

Coverage #2
USPA Tournament Liability:

-$1,000,000 coverage per occurrence, per event
-Coverage is for the claims which arise from property damage (incl. Horses) or bodily injury during a match
-Coverage is applicable to all participants (players), spectators, volunteers, or others involved in the operations necessary to a polo match.
-"Who Is An Insured" also includes coverage for the sponsoring organization, match committee members, officials and facility owners.
-All USPA sanctioned matches/tournaments or practices which are related to tournament play are covered
- Full-time "professional" players are covered for claims that arise against them under this policy.

Why do we (USPA) need this coverage?
Coverage under this policy provides players and event management critical liability coverage. If a player accidentally hits another player or horse or spectator, the policy will defend and settle claims which arise from the actual match play. If one member damages another members horse during play, and a claim is filed, the policy will respond to this type of accident as well. The policy is strictly designed for third party negligent liability, which is then broadened to include coverage for "player vs. player" claims.
